Not fit to be a mother
And don't want to be a wife
They took me to a nunnery
At a place up-river from here
Godstow, Godstow
Godstow is where I'll go
Deserted, empty and roofless
Sitting there I was freed
Unlike the women sent before, chaste and pure
It is a prison no more but a haven for noisy birds
Godstow nunnery is located on the Thames just north of Oxford. It's where Rosamund the Fair, Henry II's mistress, was buried after, so the story goes, Henry's wife poisoned her. It's also where Charles Dodgson was rowing to with Alice Liddell and her sisters when he first told them the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's been in ruins since the 17th Century. It's one of my favourite places.
