July skies, heavy and low
The pregnant clouds are overdue
Water stagnates, sweat pools
Our petals wilt and droop
We search for shade where none can be found
Weary and wayworn we trample home
To sleep until the sun goes down
The air's too thick to breathe
Hush, dear, there's nothing to fear
No cause for alarm, there's no harm will come to you
I will take care of you
Horseflies gather in swarming gangs
They take our blood, leave only disease
Her cheeks become burning coals
And fever takes a hold
As the corn ripens and grows
She shrinks and weakens and threatens to leave
The sunflower is taller than me
The weeds tower over the house
Try to sleep, dear, there's nobody here
I'll sing you a song, lullaby you along
To a peaceful place of rest
Ladybirds come like a red carpet
Crawl over the floor to welcome her
A river of rubies to carry her away
