Song of the Unfree
I am on the wrong side of this window
You were on the wrong side of the tracks
Falling foul of the law
And of the laws of nature
Is where this story begins and where it ends

Tell me, what's the difference between the inside
And the outside of a prison, do you know?
Is it just that there's less room
On the inside to wander 'round
Or is it to do with the colour of the walls?

I was always treated like an animal
Here, at least, so is everyone else
The bars are strong and tangible
The locks are firm and immovable
I know it's not all just in my mind

There are songbirds on the wrong side of this window
They call to me wanting to be let in
But there's nowhere here to build a nest
And their song it would disturb my rest
So I refuse their overtures with regret

And did they lock you up too, I never knew?
Or did you, as always, leave everyone behind?
Sometimes I hope that you went free
Other times wish you imprisoned like me
My wishes now are impotent, maybe they always were
