Wintermute
Snow White, Wintermute, skies so clear
The red of the berries, the black of your hair
I'd clasp you to me if that you wanted
Instead you'll go, leaving me haunted

The trees are stark against the blue
The crows are ruthless and so are you
The wind blows around me but dies on your lips
I yearn for but also fear your kiss

There's a shadow of death in the glint of your eye
Your laugh is harsh as the magpie's cry
The lake is frozen but still I can't cross
The robin is dying and so is the fox

You carry the spark to light the Yule log
But your breath is chill as the winter fog
I love you when I remember just what you are
I hate you when I forget

Walk with me a little while
When it gets dark we'll drink mulled wine
Tomorrow you'll go, this time I won't mind
Snow White, Wintermute, friend of mine

This song was inspired by the Wintermute family sepulchure in one of my favourite cemeteries. I loved the name and it seemed to conjure up the thick silence of snow; a combination of soft and slightly threatening. I was in California, it was December, and I was missing the stark English winter. So the song became a love song - to winter.
